What it means
When your AC shuts off, wait at least 3 minutes before turning it back on. The compressor needs time for internal refrigerant pressures to equalize. Restarting too quickly forces it to start against high pressure, which strains the motor and can shorten its life.

With our long cooling season, compressors here already log heavy runtime. Avoiding short-cycle restarts — whether from flipping the thermostat or a power flicker — is easy insurance. Many modern thermostats build in this delay automatically.
