HVAC Glossary

SEER2, tonnage, load calc, inverter — the HVAC terms you will hear, in plain English.

HVAC comes with its own vocabulary. Here are the terms you are most likely to hear, explained simply.

Sizing and efficiency

Tonnage measures cooling capacity (one ton ≈ 12,000 BTU/hr). SEER2 measures cooling efficiency — higher is more efficient. A load calculation is the measurement process that determines the right size for your home.

Equipment and parts

A heat pump cools and heats from one unit. An inverter (variable-speed) system modulates output instead of running full-on/off. The condenser is the outdoor unit; the evaporator coil and air handler are indoors. The capacitor and contactor are common electrical parts that wear out.
